If you're not yet familiar with Market Leaders, it's time to get familiar. In your user portal, you may have come across a pie-chart icon in the top right of the search dashboard, as shown below:
For an in-depth walkthrough, see How to use the Market Leaders tool.
Available in all BuildCentral products except ConstructionWire and DemolitionX, Market Leaders lets users assess the leading developers, architects, contractors, engineers, health systems, and brands for any category of planned construction projects.
For example, if in HotelMarketData you run a project search for new Luxury, Planning-stage hotel projects in Texas, using the Market Leaders function would pull the top hotel developers, architects, and contractors whose projects match those parameters, as shown in the table below:
Market Leaders Measurements
Different BuildCentral products utilize different metrics to track Market Leaders, depending on industry-specific measures.
For example, you might get different rankings if you organize based on construction-dollar-value of projects in development versus the square footage or units that development will entail. These discrepancies result from innumerable factors including location, state of the economy, building materials, labor availability, and more. As such, accurate, reliable measures vary across construction verticals.
Here's a list of the units used to determine Market Leaders in each BuildCentral product:
Market Leaders functionality not included in ConstructionWire or DemolitionX.
Geospatial Energy & Mining (GEM): Construction Dollars (in $M)
HotelMarketData: Rooms in Development
MedicalConstructionData: Construction Dollars (in $M)
PlannedRetail: Number of Projects
ResidentialData (MultiFamilyData & SingleFamilyData): Units in Development
Differences aside, though, Market Leaders always ranks based on the parameters of your search, allowing you macro- and micro-level insights to your industry's competitive landscape. Additionally, Market Leaders distinguishes between the following construction stages when tracking construction activity:
Depending on the product, you'll see either a dollar value or a number of rooms/units.
- In Development: Includes projects in planning and under construction
- Completed Last 12 Months: Just as relevant to comprehensive market research as leaders' current and planned construction pipelines is what they've already been building. So, Market Leaders also tracks recently completed project data.
